The word Chaos comes from the Greek χάος, the primordial nothingness before creation, or possibly the deific embodiment of such. Yet, the modern understanding of Chaos is inherently post-order. It calls the image of riots and violence. I would like to draw attention to these two types of chaos, pre order, and post order. I shall refer to them as primordial chaos and entropic chaos. Primordial Chaos is the state of reality before it is structured. Think of the primordial soup of organic compounds needed to create life, or the high energy low structure state during the first few split seconds after the big bang. Entropic chaos is chaos that ensues when order breaks down. It is the scattered dead stars of the far future universe, and it is the unpleasent earthly experience of degrading social institutions. And yet, it would be foolish to consider these forms of chaos entirely seperate. Decomposing organisms are an order breaking down, and yet this is part of the recycling of nutrients that form new organisms, new ordered beings. When you see chaos in society or in nature, keep this dualism in mind, what looks like entropy, could be an act of creation.
